Short answer: measure the threaded shaft, not the head. Banjo bolts get sold and searched by thread diameter and pitch, things like M10 x 1.0 or 7/16 x 20 UNF, and that number describes the threads that go into the caliper, wheel cylinder, or master cylinder port, not the bolt’s overall length or head size.

Why banjo bolt sizing trips people up
A banjo bolt looks simple, a hollow bolt with a cross-drilled hole partway down the shaft, sealing a banjo fitting against a port with a pair of crush washers on either side of the fitting’s eye. But there’s no single “brake banjo bolt” thread. Different manufacturers, different eras, and different vehicle brands used different threads for what is functionally the same job, so a bolt that looks right can still be the wrong pitch and either won’t thread in cleanly or will feel loose and eventually leak.
How to actually measure one
Three things matter, in this order:
- Major diameter, the outside diameter of the threaded shaft. A caliper comes stamped with this from the factory in some cases; otherwise measure across the threads with calipers.
- Thread pitch, how far apart the threads are. Metric bolts are specified as diameter x pitch in millimeters (M10 x 1.0, M10 x 1.25, M10 x 1.5 are all different bolts that will each thread partway into the wrong port before binding). SAE/UNF bolts are specified as diameter x threads-per-inch (7/16 x 20, 7/16 x 24, 3/8 x 24 are three different pitches on very similar-looking bolts).
- Length and configuration, standard, short, long, or double-banjo (for stacking two hose fittings on one port, common on calipers with two brake lines feeding one side).
The safest method if you have the old bolt in hand: thread a known-good nut or fitting of a suspected size onto it by hand. If it goes on smoothly with no forcing for several turns, you’ve got the right pitch. Forcing threads on a brake fitting is how you strip a caliper port, which is a much more expensive mistake than ordering the wrong $7 bolt twice.
Common sizes
The most common banjo bolt threads on domestic and import vehicles are M10 x 1.0mm and M10 x 1.25mm on the metric side, and 7/16-20 and 7/16-24 UNF on the SAE side, with 3/8-24 and M12 sizes also common on certain calipers and hose ends. Don’t forget the washers
Every banjo bolt needs a fresh pair of crush washers on reassembly, they’re designed to deform once to seal, and reusing them is a common source of a slow weep at the fitting. Match the washer’s inner diameter to the bolt, not the fitting’s outer size.
