Short answer: 3/16″ is the standard for the vast majority of passenger vehicle brake lines; 1/4″ shows up on some larger vehicles, older domestic applications, and specific high-flow or aftermarket setups. Bigger isn’t automatically better, the line size is matched to the system’s fittings and flow needs, not chosen freely.

What the size actually refers to

Brake line size is the tube’s outer diameter, not its wall thickness or flow area directly, 3/16″ and 1/4″ tube take different flare dies and different fittings, so the two aren’t interchangeable even where both would physically fit in the same routing.

Why 3/16″ is the default

Most passenger cars, from decades-old classics to current production, run 3/16″ line for the majority of the system, sized to match the flow the master cylinder and calipers are designed around. It’s also simply the more common size to source fittings and flares for, which matters if you’re doing your own work and want a straightforward parts run rather than hunting for less common hardware.

Where 1/4″ shows up

1/4″ line appears on some trucks, older domestic applications with higher-volume master cylinders, and certain performance or racing setups where the larger tube is matched to a system designed around it. It is not simply an upgrade you bolt onto a 3/16″ system, the fittings, and often the master cylinder and proportioning valve, need to match.

Mixing sizes on one vehicle

It’s normal for a single brake system to use more than one tube size in different sections, for example, a larger supply line from the master cylinder stepping down before a caliper, but that’s a factory or design decision, not something to improvise by grabbing whichever tube is on hand. When replacing a section, match what’s already there unless you have a specific reason and the parts to support a change.
