Short answer: an air conditioning flaring tool has to form the same 45° SAE cone a brake line tool does, just on thin-wall refrigerant copper instead of steel, and the refrigeration trade calls for a single flare rather than the double flare cars need. The geometry is identical between the two trades. What’s different is the tube, the sizes you’ll actually run into on a line set, and the nut you have to remember before you ever pull the tool’s handle.

The sizes that actually show up on a line set
Residential and light commercial refrigerant line sets run in a narrow band. A 9,000 to 24,000 BTU mini-split is almost always 1/4″ liquid line paired with 3/8″ gas line, sometimes stepping the gas side up to 1/2″ on the bigger single-zone units. Multi-zone and central systems push into 5/8″ and 3/4″ gas lines, and that’s outside what a compact flaring kit is built for. If you’re doing a single-zone mini-split, a wall unit, or fixing a leak on a smaller commercial box, you’re working in 1/4″ to 3/8″ almost every time. If you’re running line for a multi-zone or a rooftop unit, check your gas line size before you buy anything. A 3/8″ ceiling doesn’t stretch to 5/8″.
Thread specs live on the nut, not the tool
The flaring tool only shapes the cone. The nut that actually threads onto the fitting has to be slid onto the tube before you form that flare, because there’s no getting it past a finished cone afterward. Refrigerant-service SAE 45° flare nuts follow SAE J512 thread sizing:
- 1/4″ tube: 7/16-20
- 5/16″ tube: 1/2-20
- 3/8″ tube: 5/8-18
- 1/2″ tube: 3/4-16
- 5/8″ tube: 7/8-14
Don’t grab a spare fitting off the brake-line shelf for this. Automotive SAE 45° inverted flare uses a different thread series at the same nominal sizes. A 3/8″ brake union is 9/16-18, not 5/8-18. It’s close enough to start on the nut by hand and bind up two threads in, which either strips it or has you blaming the flare for a problem the nut caused.
Single flare, not double
Cars need a double flare on 45° SAE brake tube because steel line is thin enough that a single cone can split under clamping load and years of vibration. Refrigeration standard is a single 45° flare. Soft-annealed ACR copper doesn’t need the folded wall a brake line does, and refrigerant-service practice has never called for the second fold there. A tool built around a die that forces the fold stage isn’t wrong on AC copper, it’s just doing a step nobody asked for. What you actually want is a die that produces a clean single flare on demand, on tube that thin, without your having to trick a double-flare clamp into stopping early.
The mistake that cracks the flare
ACR copper is softer and thinner than brake pipe, and it punishes the same mistakes a lot faster. Extending the tube too far past the flaring block face gives the punch more material to work than the die was sized for, and the cone splits right at the base instead of forming a smooth taper. Skipping a drop of refrigerant oil on the flare face before you seat the nut lets the copper gall against the fitting as it’s torqued, and that gall line becomes the leak path once the system’s under real pressure. Running the nut down with a wrench until it stops, instead of to a real torque spec, crushes a flare that was actually fine going in.
None of that shows up when you test-fit the joint dry. It shows up after the system’s evacuated, charged, and running, which means redoing the whole job plus the refrigerant you just lost.
Catch it earlier: pressure the line with nitrogen and watch it hold for a few minutes before you ever pull a vacuum. A flare that’s going to leak almost always shows it at nitrogen pressure, and finding it there costs you a fitting and five minutes instead of a full evacuation and a second fill.
