A double flaring tool kit needs a fold-forming die in addition to the cone punch, and a clamp rigid enough to hold the tube square through two separate strokes instead of one. Buy on tube size alone and you can end up with a kit that only ever produces a single flare no matter how you use it, because the fold stage that makes a flare “double” isn’t a technique choice, it’s a part in the box.

What a double flare actually asks of the tool

A single 45° flare forms in one pass: the punch drives into the tube end and folds the wall out into a cone. A double flare needs the tube end folded back on itself first, then the cone formed over that folded lip, so the finished flare is two layers of tube wall thick where it seats. That’s two separate die operations on the same piece of tube, not one operation done more carefully. A kit built for double flares includes a fold punch and a cone adapter as separate pieces for each tube size. A kit that only has a cone punch will still make something flare-shaped, it just can’t do the fold, and it will never produce a real double flare no matter how you clamp it.

What’s actually in a proper kit

Sizes first: for brake work you want dies for 3/16″, 1/4″, 5/16″ and 3/8″ tube, measured by outside diameter, not the fitting thread. 3/16″ covers most passenger cars front to rear. 1/4″ and up shows up on trucks, trailers, and lines that also feed a proportioning valve or a rear axle. Skip a size and you’ll find out the first time a job calls for it, usually mid-teardown.

Beyond size, check the flare types the dies actually cover. The clamp matters as much as the dies

The fold stage is where a weak clamp shows up. If the bar or yoke holding the tube can flex or the tube can rotate even slightly between the fold pass and the cone pass, the two operations don’t line up and the finished flare comes out lopsided, thicker on one side than the other. A flare like that can still thread onto the fitting and look fine sitting on the bench. It shows up later as a slow weep at the flare nut, usually after the car’s already back together. A bar-type clamp that locks the tube down once and holds it through both passes is what a double-flare kit needs. A cheap two-piece yoke tightened with a single wing nut is built for a quick single flare, not for holding position through a second stroke.

The mistake that costs a whole tube

Match the thread to the tube before you cut anything, because getting either one wrong doesn’t fail cleanly:

  • 3/16″ tube pairs with a 3/8-24 thread
  • 1/4″ tube pairs with a 7/16-24 thread
  • 5/16″ tube pairs with a 1/2-20 thread
  • 3/8″ tube pairs with a 9/16-18 thread

Get the pairing wrong and the fitting starts onto the threads fine, then binds before the flare seats, which feels exactly like a cross-thread even though it isn’t one. The other expensive mistake is forming the flare before sliding the flare nut and any union onto the tube. Once the flare’s formed it’s wider than the tube behind it and nothing slides past it, so getting the order backward means cutting the flare off and starting over on a shorter piece of pipe.

Stainless is where a cheap kit gets found out

Stainless brake pipe work-hardens as it’s formed, faster than copper-nickel or mild steel. A die that flexes under load, or a clamp with any play in it, will let the tube walk slightly mid-fold on stainless in a way it wouldn’t on softer tube, and that’s enough to crack the fold or throw the cone off-center. This is the real reason a stainless-rated kit is its own category rather than marketing on the box: the dies and the clamp both have to hold tighter tolerances to keep the tube from splitting right where it needs to fold cleanly. Buying it once instead of twice

A flaring kit that can’t actually do the fold stage doesn’t announce that on the shelf. It looks like any other flaring kit until you’re partway through a job and the flare coming off it won’t seal, and by then you’ve already cut and wasted tube finding that out. Check for a fold die and a cone die listed separately per tube size, a clamp rigid enough to hold through two passes, and the flare types actually named on the box, before you buy, not after.
